Northwest group Tribute
Dear Members – Nationally.
Paul FieldsNorth West Chairman – Club Trustee – Honorary Member – Vice President – Hawk Board founder member.

It is with great sadness to report the death of Paul our chairman on the 27th October 2007.
Pauls funeral arrangements were held locally at Longton Lancashire, were Pauls many family friends and club supporters demonstrated their affections via their attendance.
Our acting director Nick Haverman Mart attended on behalf of council members
and head office

Many of our particularly younger members will not be familiar with Pauls long standing association with the club, and his highly thought of status amongst his
colleagues at council etc.

It is appropriate and with affection that the brief historical anthology is given.
Paul joined the club during 1968 and quickly demonstrated his willingness to become involved in these early formative years by representing the club at the 1970 CLA fair.
Paul flew his Lanner Falcons at the CLA, although now “old hat” long wings then on display were a novelty!!

During the early seventies Paul was elected as a committee member and began to put forward and implement  the clubs regional policy by organizing the NW groups first meeting of the 18th May 1973, we all nationally enjoy this format today, Paul was a major player In making this happen.

Although Paul sometimes padantic strict approach to business meetings etc,Paul was foremost a practical falconer were anyone putting together field meets – helping to get hawks going could rely on him for help and support. Then radical field meets at Raskelf Yorkshire organized by Paul were comparable only by Woodhall spar, many of our current NW field meet venues we have Paul to thank for.
Supply of hawks in those days was difficult, the clubs breeding program for members was encouraged and helped by Paul were he produced Peregrines and Sakers for club use.
However Pauls probable preference in the field were some of his high flying tiercels
over his English pointers – “Pearl” and “Penny” with which he had good success at
grey partridge.

During the last few years Pauls attendance at NW field meets was sadly irregular for mobility reasons, however any field meet issues discussed at our business meeting were 100% backed and encouraged by Paul.
Particularly financial help from group funds to the field masters was “the reason we are here” was always Pauls moto, let us hope we can remember and emulate that.
Due to health Pauls monthly business input has been missed in latter months, however direction and help over the phone had helped overcome that, now without help over the phone, I believe we must and will continue the outstanding work done by Paul and his many club friends particularly Steve H, it is what he would dearly want to see continued.

Respect, affection and acknowledgment of individuals are not always made apparent during “their term” or throughout our daily activities, Paul we should most
certainly mentioned it earlier, but I guess better later than never!
We are and will miss your direction.

The group are examining a more direct way of expressing our thanks to Paul and his family for the direction and work put in, and here for the record most truly thank you the Fields family for the many years of consideration and attendance to the groups needs.

Yours very Truly
Barry Charlton
Secretary – NW Group

The North Western Group will be hosting the 2008 Annual General Meeting.

The North West Group has a membership of active falconers covering most aspects of the sport.  From flying Falcons at Game or Crows to Goshawks and Harris Hawks being flown at a wide variety of quarry.  Many falconers also breed hawks and falcons and new members joining the group can be sure of a warm welcome and plenty of advice (If you want it or not)!

I would be grateful for articles and photographs from group members to be incorporated in the site.  I have added a few photographs from my own collection but I'm sure that there are some real gems out there in the group.  To contact me just click on my name at the bottom of this page. Mallam

Three Field meet reports written by Barbara Royal:

In October, I went to spectate at the long wing meet at Knowlsey where again the weather was superb.
There were 10 birds flying and 7 spectators.
With plenty of quarry about first off was Tony Armstrong with his Gyr/Peregrine. The bird flew a pheasant, hitting it twice but unable to bind to it. Ellis was next with his gyr/peregrine. Unfortunately, the local wild peregrine decided to join in and its intended quarry was Ellis’s bird. We all anxiously watched as the wild bird continuously stooped at the gyr, chasing it away. Ellis managed to recover his bird a little later but only after it giving as good as it got.
All the birds tried their best and there were some nice flights at pheasant and partridge by Barry Charlton, Tony Armstrong and Robin Jeffs. Richard Jones’s tiercel peregrine had a lovely stoop at a pheasant but bounced off. Think he mistook it for a partridge!

And then there was Richard Newton’s bird! The bird chased a cock pheasant towards the safari park narrowly missing the electric fence. On missing the pheasant the next choice was either a brace of ostrich or a rhino. It could only happen to Richard!!
Although the end of the day filled the quarry bag with two wood pigeon it was very entertaining.

Well, the hunting season got off to a fairly good start at Malham. The weather was perfect and we were falling over rabbits. The goshawk group went to check out some new land Brian had acquired and were back in the pub by lunch-time after having caught 11 rabbits! The rest of us with Harris Hawks apart from Tony with his young gos, split into two groups. Brian took the new lads with him and Molly, Brian’s pointer was pointing rabbits for fun. Unfortunately, the birds weren’t quite at weight but their discipline was excellent and one of the birds had a superb flight and caught a rabbit near a wall. I went with Paul and Tony, together with Tony’s lad, Anthony and my ferrets. The ferrets worked very well and we managed to bag three rabbits, Paul’s female Harris flying very well and catching two of them. My male caught the other one.

The second meet at Malham at the end of October was very rewarding. The start of the day was horrendous with torrential rain but it soon cleared and we ended up with weather not unlike the middle of spring. We split up into three groups and I took Paul Kennedy, Bob Wolstencroft and his two young lads. The birds flew extremely well and after some superb and exciting chases we came away with 8 rabbit. Bob’s ferreting skills were next to none and I know that he really enjoyed the day. Maybe we can convert him into a short winger – or a ferreter!!! By the time we got back to the pub and met up with the others we had 24 rabbits in the bag – not a bad day’s hawking.
